HILLSBOROUGH CAMPAIGNER ADDRESSES LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCE

YOU'LL Never Walk Alone rang out around the Labour Party Conference main hall after the daughter of a Liverpool fan who was killed at the Hillsborough disaster delivered an impassioned speech.

Charlotte Hennessy was just six when her dad, Jimmy, died, having travelled to watch Liverpool play Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough Stadium on April 15 1989.

He was one of 97 Liverpool fans who were unlawfully killed that day.

The families of those who died have faced decades of lies, smears and state cover-ups as they battled for truth and justice for their loved ones - and their campaigning has resulted in the Hillsborough Law, which the Labour government laid before parliament earlier this month.

The new law will create a new duty of candour that means public servants and authorities must act with honesty, transparency and tell the truth - or face criminal sanctions.

After Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson opened proceedings on Sunday, Sir Keir Starmer spoke to the main hall at Liverpool Exhibition Centre about the Hillsborough Law, before Ms Hennessy spoke about the decades-long campaign.

The Prime Minister said achieving the law was an “unacceptably long and hard fight for the campaigners, for the families and victims’
