VENUE WHICH HELPED TRANSFORM RUN-DOWN AREA INTO THRIVING HOTSPOT WINS TOP AWARD
Owner Gary Manning outside The Quarter
THE owner of an award-winning Liverpool cafe has described being named among the best in the UK as a “wonderful compliment”.
Gary Manning and his brother Colin run The Quarter, a long-established independent restaurant on Falkner Street in the city's bohemian Georgian Quarter.
The venue has been a fixture in the area for more than two decades, although Gary said it looked very different when they first invested there. In 2003, the Georgian Quarter was still shaking off its reputation as a red-light district, while nearby Toxteth continued to be associated with riots that had taken place more than 20 years earlier.
Today, while Falkner Street retains its character and edge, it has become a thriving cultural hotspot. It is not unusual to see Premier League footballers stopping by for lunch or film crews calling in for coffee while working locally, alongside the loyal regulars who consider The Quarter a home from home.
