Tribute to the iconic musician who hails from Dumbarton

- JENNY FOULDS

A music fan has organised the first ever tribute event to Talking Heads frontman David Byrne in his home town of Dumbarton.

Aliya Hashmi says it's time “one of the coolest exports of the town” is celebrated.

She has organised Byrne's Night, a live music and arts event which will take place at Dumbarton Football Club on Friday, May 15.

Local bands will perform sets of David Byrne’s Talking Heads songs and his solo work, as well as some of their own music.

There will also be DJs, visuals, exclusive art, and more yet to be confirmed and announced.

Speaking to the Lennox Herald, Aliya said: “I could hardly believe that no one has done something like this in Dumbarton before, and thought it was about time to celebrate one of the coolest exports of the town.

“I lived in Ayr for several years and Dumfries for one year - both of these towns make a big deal (quite rightly) about the Robert Burns connections, and I thought, why doesn't Dumbarton celebrate being the birthplace of David Byrne, the frontman of one of the most innovative pop groups in the world?”

David was born in Dumbarton in 1952 and moved to the US with his family as a child. He co-founded Talking Heads in 1975 in New York City.
