There's no better tonic than foraging and listening to birdsong

This week I have mostly been eating asparagus kale from my garden. I had never heard of this wonderful veg before, it has kale like leaves and broccoli stem like shoots. It is delicious and prolific.

I got the seeds free at Carl-isle train station autumn 2023, as part of a community garden initiative. And whilst the note attached said they are not guaranteed, they have fed both me and my friend Gabriella throughout winter and still going strong. If I compare that with the high price we pay for commercial vegetable seeds, many of which never germinate, I can’t help but think we are being ripped off a wee bit.
