Before dawn, when Srinagar’s old city was still asleep, a man would appear carrying a chest of water strapped to his back like a leather sack.

He moved through the narrow lanes, sprinkling water to settle the dust.

Behind him, a sweeper followed with a broom, tidying the streets before the first shops opened.

This was a rhythm of life, a culture of care that every child grew up watching and imitating. Cleanliness was not discussed. It was practiced.

Today that man is only a memory. His footsteps no longer echo in the alleys, and the sweepers who once worked with steady pride are fewer and often unnoticed.

The routines that shaped a shared respect for streets, drains, and riverbanks have faded. What remains is a landscape where garbage piles up, drains overflow, and the habits that once protected public health are slipping away.
