THEY say if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again and that was certainly the case in yesterday's featured Paddy Power Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham.

- BRIAN FLANAGAN at PRESTBURY PARK

The 11-year-old Home By The Lee, at the fifth attempt and at odds of 33-1, captured the day three highlight to become the joint-oldest winner ever of the three-mile contest.

The Joseph O'Brien veteran first competed in the race in 2022 when he finished sixth to Flooring Porter and three subsequent runs between 2023 and 2025 saw his best finish a third to Teahupoo two years ago.

But yesterday at Cheltenham he dug deep under a strong JJ Slevin battle on bravely and defeated the fast finishing Ballyburn by a length and a quarter.

The son of Fame And Glory has been the horse of a lifetime for his owner and breeder Sean O'Driscoll, from winning a bumper on his first race seven years ago to yesterday's astonishing ascent to the top of the staying hurdle division at Cheltenham.

The Cork businessman, a former CEO of Glen Dimplex, names his horses after his home county and the red and white colours are very much those of the Rebel County.

“They'll be singing, ‘Beautiful city, charming and pretty, beautiful city, my Home By The Lee!” beamed Drimoleague native O'Driscoll, accompanied by his wife Rose and family.
