YESTERDAY was Halloween so here are some facts and feats about the spookiest day of the year.

THE name Halloween (or Halloween) is a contraction of All Hallows' Eve.

The first jack-o'-lanterns were carved from turnips, not pumpkins, and were based on an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack - a man who invited the devil for a drink.

On October 31, 2013, Stephen Clarke carved a mouth, ears, eyes and nose in a pumpkin in just 16.47 seconds on live TV.

The fear of Halloween is termed Samhainophobia.

Black cats are associated with Halloween because of the medieval belief that witches could transform into black cats.
