Praise for 'compassion' in decision over backpacker murdered in India

Mum's relief inquest for Danielle will be at home in Ireland

THE devastated mother of Danielle McLaughlin, who was raped and killed in India, has praised the "compassion" shown by the decision to have her inquest at home in Ireland.

The 28-year-old backpacker, from Buncrana, Co Donegal, was murdered by a man who she knew in March 2017 shortly after arriving in the country.

Her remains were returned home a fortnight after her death but it is only now - three months after her killer was finally convicted for the evil crime of eight years ago - that her inquest has been confirmed.

Danielle's devoted mum Andrea Brannigan issued a statement to thank Ireland's Attorney General Rossa Fanning, Donegal coroner Dr Denis McCauley and her own solicitor Desmond Doherty for working to secure the inquest.

Ms Brannigan said: "I understand and appreciate that the circumstances of Danielle's case, and the fact that she was killed when abroad, makes her case exceptional.
