Minister vows to kick out foreign criminals

FOREIGN convicts with no Irish, British or EU passports face deportation once released from jail, Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan confirmed yesterday.

He gave the assurance in response to a number of Dail questions from Independent Midlands TD Carol Nolan.

The Fianna Fail minister said: "I am fully committed to ensuring Ireland's immigration system is robust and rules based.

"The removal of persons who are involved in criminality and those who are a danger to society is an essential priority for me as Minister, my Department and the Garda Commissioner.

"My officials work closely with members of An Garda Siochana and the Irish Prison Service to ensure high-risk persons are prioritised for removal from Ireland.
