THE Government has been accused of rowing back on climate promises as last year was the third-warmest on record.

Research from the Copernicus research institute shows the crucial climate tipping point of a 1.5C rise in temperatures will be reached by the end of this decade.

This is over 10 years earlier than predictions that were made in 2015 when the Paris Agreement was signed.

Last week, Climate Minister Darragh O'Brien said Ireland will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by just half of the 51% target by 2030.

Green Party leader Roderic O'Gorman said the Government needs to act now.
