New Gas boss fired up for drop battle after shedding over 8 stone

- BY JASON MELLOR

STEVE EVANS is only half the man he used to be - but Bristol Rovers were won over by the sheer weight of his reputation.

The slimline Scot has lost an astonishing eight and a half stone since leaving Rotherham in March - powered by a burning desire to shed the pounds to ensure he’s around to see his four-and-a-half year-old grandson grow up.

Evans (inset before his weight loss) answered Rovers’ SOS this week after his close friend Darrell Clarke paid for a disastrous 10-game losing streak that has left the West Country club in grave danger of being relegated back to the National League.
