DIRECTOR David Merriman has said the late Ian Bailey was “wrongly accused” of the death of Sophie Toscan Du Plantier as his new movie with Jim Sheridan is set to air in cinemas nationwide.

The French filmmaker was found bludgeoned to death outside her West Cork holiday home on December 23, 1996.

Bailey, who died in January 2024, was the prime suspect in the case.

The 66-year-old journalist was arrested but never charged in Ireland over Sophie's murder.

In 2019, a French court convicted Bailey in absentia of the voluntary homicide of Du Plantier, sentencing him to 25 years in prison, but Bailey avoided extradition and remained in Ireland until his death last year.
