Too hot to handle... experts warn us to stay safe in heat

- BY SEAN MURPHY

BEACHGOERS are flocking to seaside hotspots around the country to enjoy the welcome blast of summer sunshine amid 30C heatwave conditions.

But they have also been reminded of sun safety amid the high temperatures and urged to watch out for painful stings from jellyfish and weever fish.

Road safety chiefs also warned: "Summertime is the most dangerous time of the year on our roads."

Temperatures could reach as high as 30C this weekend and Met Eireann yesterday placed 14 counties under a Status Yellow high temperature warning. That comes into effect from today and will be expanded nationwide for tomorrow.

FIRES

The issue is standard policy when temperatures are forecast to exceed 27C for three consecutive days.

It applies to Carlow, Cavan, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Tipperary, and Westmeath from midday today until 6am tomorrow and for the rest of the country from midday tomorrow until 6am on Sunday.
