HAVING A 'BELTER'
Irish Daily Mirror
|November 01, 2025
The ski resort here in Méribel was founded by Scotland's Major Peter Lindsay in 1936. With the help of locals, he chose to design the Méribel we see today - and what a job they did.
-
It’s almost unimaginably perfect, designed in a visionary way, a noninvasive architecture inspired by the traditional Savoyard habitat - chalets of limited height, built with wood, the country stone and the lauze roofs. The founding architectural project was always respected and has paid off.
On arrival, we are whisked to Le Coucou, perhaps the most stunning of all the buildings on the slopes of Meribel.
It has 10 floors but doesn't exceed the height limit as it rolls down the slope at the foot of the Rond-Point des Piste, with some 55 rooms and suites in a chic, relaxed truly 5-star hotel.
Le Coucou, named after a local mischievous bird, do things differently. Here, you don't queue at reception to check in. You take a seat in the bar overlooking the ski slopes, and the staff will do all the work for you, while you sip on a cocktail or a large beer.
It's warm, welcoming and they take customer service to a whole new level. Guests are 'cocooned'.
The suite is stunning. We are fortunate to stay in one of their two large independent chalets, connected to the hotel by an interior passageway - all adding to the charm and intimacy.
The view from the balcony and terrace is truly breathtaking. There is a private pool on the bottom floor, with a sauna and steam room. The hotel also boasts a spa, with an indoor and outdoor pool, perfect for relaxation after a physically taxing day on the slopes.
Floating along the heated pool as the steam rises and the snow falls, with the valley in sight, is something you will never forget.
