Silhouette portrait sells for hefty sum

A REMARKABLE image of the Reverend Joseph Coltman, the Beverley Minster cleric who was the fattest man in Regency England, made seven times pre-sale predictions when it went under the hammer in an auction at the Duggleby Stephenson in York on Friday.

Expected at one point to go for £100 - £200, the silhouette portrait attracted bidding from as far away as South Carolina in the United States - selling for £1,400 in just 55 seconds.
The picture was entered in the Country House Sale after being spotted hanging on the wall in an East Yorkshire house by Duggleby valuer Dominic Cox, who had been invited to visit and assess a collection of antique silverware and other items that the owners had earmarked for disposal.
Dominic said: "The silver was nice but the silhouette was the big find of the visit - quite literally!
