Patriotism and jingoism are not same thing

I’M afraid you're wrong again, Peter Auty (Mail Box, May 17). Patriotism and jingoism are most certainly not the same thing, as you claim in your letter.

Few words in the English language have identical meanings, and that’s the case with patriotism and jingoism.

There is nothing at all wrong with patriotism: I am a patriot from a very patriotic background.

My father served in the Royal Navy during World War 2 and was very proud to have done so; my elder son is a Royal Marine and has served his country in many places, including Afghanistan.
