HULL City Council is encouraging residents to find out what benefits they are entitled to.

Many are missing out simply because they don't know that they can claim.

Whether you're working, retired, caring for someone, living with a disability or raising children, there may be benefits or financial support available. With so many forms, rules and systems it can be difficult to know where to begin but there is free, confidential advice available which is easily accessed and can help make a difference.

There are a wide range of benefits that people are unaware that they can claim including:

■Universal Credit - for people on low incomes in or out of work

■Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - for those living with a long-term health condition or disability

■Carer's Allowance - for unpaid carers looking after someone 35+ hours a week

■Pension Credit - for older residents on lower incomes

■Housing Benefit - for eligible residents not on Universal Credit, including some pensioners

■Discretionary Housing Payment - for people who may need extra help with their rent

■Council Tax Reduction - if you are on a low income you may qualify for a reduction in your council tax

Child Benefit - for most parents or guardians of children under 16 (or under 20 if they're in education or training)
