Expansion to 16 is backed by Ellis

WAKEFIELD Trinity owner Matt Ellis has said the scrapping of loop fixtures was a major factor in his decision to back an extended Super League competition - and believes it could expand even further in the future to include 16 teams.

The topflight competition will grow to 14 clubs next season, with the top 12 decided by IMG. Clubs 13 and 14 will then be recommended by a panel.
Ellis, who has overseen Wakefield's resurgence from the Championship to Super League since taking over in 2023, explained his reasoning behind supporting expansion.
"I just think, going forward, the loop fixtures are a massive issue," he told BBC Radio Leeds.
