Carney’s challenge for RFL's review
Hull Daily Mail
|November 13, 2025
SKY Sports pundit Brian Carney has challenged the RFL to choose between ‘more of the same’ or a ‘line in the sand’ when assessing if Shaun Wane will stay on as England coach after this autumn’s Ashes whitewash.
-
England were defeated 3-0 by Australia and that has led the RFL to review the Ashes, with Wane admitting after Saturday's game at Headingley that his own role will be assessed.
Wane won two Test series against Tonga and Samoa but fell short against the latter in the 2022 World Cup, a defeat that, by his own admission, would be a ‘disaster’ and ‘on him’.
He is contracted until the end of 2026 and has insisted he is the right man to lead England into the next World Cup next autumn. However, Carney, a former GB winger, has written a damning assessment of Wane's tenure - one that began in 2020.
“Shaun Wane's own words have come home to roost," Carney wrote. “Wane didn't just set the bar; he fashioned the trapdoor beneath it. Those were his words, not anyone else's. And by his own measure, the two most important campaigns of his six years in charge have been nothing short of catastrophic.
