SC junks Delhi Police plea for construction along Yamuna

The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up the Union government for seeking approval for the construction of accommodation for Delhi Police trainees in the floodplains of the Yamuna, recalling that when the river was in spate in July 2023, floodwaters had reached the entrance of the top court, but the Centre was still "toying with the wrong idea".
The court was hearing a plea by the Delhi Police, which was appealing against a September 2000 order by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) rejecting permission to construct accommodation of its trainees in the floodplains.
"Why do you want to construct on the floodplains of the river? Find out some other place... The government should not do this. In fact, the government should never do this," said a bench of justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan, dismissing the Delhi Police petition.
The Delhi Police comes under the jurisdiction of the Union ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
