Political ideology can't be a bar: SC on council elections

Having a political ideology cannot be a bar for becoming a member of a bar council, the Supreme Court said on Friday, refusing to entertain a petition that sought curbs on a person belonging to a political party from taking up membership of statutory lawyer bodies.
Finding no reason why a lawyer who is a member of Parliament belonging to a certain political party could be barred from taking up posts in the Bar Council of India and state bar councils, a bench headed by Justice Surya Kant said, "We are a democratic country which can have persons with different ideologies. If a member of the bar has a particular ideology, that includes political ideology, what is wrong with it?"
