Govt eyes more voter participation in areas now freed of Maoists

Security forces have freed a total area of almost 4,350 sq km in Chhattisgarh from Maoist control in the last two years, enabling the state government to take measures to encourage voter participation and the Election Commission of India (ECI) to set up 1,000 more polling booths for this year's assembly elections, officials aware of the details said.
Security forces have also set up at least 22 new forward operating bases (FOBs) across the state in the last two years and efforts are underway to open more such camps ahead of the polls, the officials added.
Voting for the 90-member assembly is scheduled to be held in two phases, on 17. The results will be announced on December 3.
