Chhattisgarh police to probe 'excise evasion' under 2012 BJP regime

The Chhattisgarh Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has initiated an investigation into alleged evasion of excise duty during 2012-2017 when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was in power in the state, a move widely seen as an attempt to counter the now-stayed Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into a similar fraud under the Congress government.
A senior Chhattisgarh police officer said a private complaint was received last month regarding evasion of excise duty between 2012 and 2017 to help "certain people" of the then ruling party. "The state EOW has summoned around 40 people, including excise officers, liquor contractors and some businessmen in the last two months," the officer said, seeking anonymity.
A senior EOW official said no first information report (FIR) has been registered yet.
