Cabinet approves Bill amending 28% GST on online gaming

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved proposed changes to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act, with an aim to introduce the amendments in the ongoing Monsoon session of the Parliament, to enable it to go ahead with its July 11 decision to levy 28% tax on bets made in casinos, race courses and online games, two officials aware of the matter said
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday morning, the officials added, but no formal communication about the meeting was issued by the government.
The 50th GST Council meeting on July 11 decided to levy 28% GST on the three types of bets. In its next meeting, on August 2, the council considered some necessary changes in the law to enforce the July 11 decisions.
