Bengal police deny nod for Cong's meet; Kharge writes to Didi

A public meeting of the Congress scheduled for Sunday at Siliguri was cancelled after the West Bengal police denied permission for the same, even as party president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to chief minister Mamata Banerjee over safety of the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra during its passage through the eastern state, people familiar with the matter said on Saturday.

Gandhi, who is spearheading the party's east-to-west march, will rejoin the yatra in Jalpaiguri district on Sunday after a two-day break. The yatra traversed into the Coochbehar district of West Bengal from Assam on Thursday morning. "On January 25, Rahul Gandhi had gone back to Delhi following which the yatra was paused for two days. He is scheduled to rejoin the yatra on January 28," state Congress leader Amitabha Chakraborty said.
