The Supreme Court on Wednesday deferred the hearing of multiple petitions challenging the validity of the 2023 law governing the appointment of the chief election commissioner (CEC) and election commissioners (ECs) even as Gyanesh Kumar took over as India's next CEC amid opposition from the Congress party that cited the pendency of the case.

NEW DELHI: First step for nation building is voting, new chief election commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar said on Wednesday as he took over as the 26th head of the poll body, while Vivek Joshi assumed charge as an election commissioner.

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday night appointed Kumar, a 1988 batch Kerala-cadre bureaucrat who retired as the Union cooperation secretary before being appointed as an EC in 2024. Kumar has replaced Rajiv Kumar, who demitted office on Tuesday.
