DIGITAL CURRENCY TO NOW BE USED FOR FOOD SUBSIDY

Food and consumer affairs minister Pralhad Joshi on Thursday launched a pilot project in Puducherry to offer food subsidy through the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) e-rupee, the country’s first instance of programming the RBI's digital currency to deliver welfare benefits.
Under the pilot, the Union government will credit food subsidy to beneficiaries as a programmable digital tokenised currency. This currency can only be used to purchase or redeem grains under the public distribution system (PDS).
