Naming of revenue villages sparks row

The naming of new revenue villages in Jodhpur and Balotra districts has sparked significant controversy, with allegations that several villages have been named after influential individuals, caste groups, or local deities in clear violation of government guidelines.
JODHPUR:
More than 30 petitions have been filed in the Rajasthan high court challenging such names, leading the court to stay the effect and operation of the naming notifications in several cases.
The controversy stems from a circular issued by the revenue department on August 20, 2009, which provides clear parameters for the creation and naming of new revenue villages.
According to the circular, the name of a new village should not reflect any individual, religion, caste, or sub-caste, and must preferably be proposed through a consensus among the villagers.
However, instances of blatant disregard for these guidelines have come to light, not only in recent government notifications but also in cases dating back two years, which have now reached the court.
