NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump's newly announced 25% tariff on imported vehicles could ultimately benefit India, as automobiles top the tariff reduction agenda in ongoing bilateral trade talks aimed at preventing punitive actions set to begin April 2, according to officials familiar with the negotiations.

The US administration on Wednesday unveiled the new auto tariffs, which will take effect on April 3, expanding a global trade war that has already hit stocks and strained ties with allies. "The above ad valorem tariff is in addition to any other duties, fees, exactions, and charges applicable to such imported automobiles and certain automobile parts articles," the presidential proclamation dated March 26 said.
