Ten labourers were killed in an explosion at an illegal coal mine in the Thangsku area of East Jaifitia Hills district of Meghalaya on Thursday, the deadliest mining accident in Meghalaya in recent years, underscoring the continuing risks of unauthorised coal mining in the region.
Confirming the deaths, district police chief Vikas Yadav said the blast took place at a remotely located mining site, delaying rescue efforts. “Ten deaths have been confirmed so far.
