Tensions gripped Basanpeer village in Jaisalmer district on Thursday after two groups clashed over the reconstruction of historical cenotaphs (chhatris) near a village pond. The situation turned chaotic as both sides pelted stones at each other, police said, adding that personnel were also targeted prompting them to resort to mild force to disperse the mob.
In an official statement the Jaisalmer police said, “On Thursday, during the reconstruction of cenotaphs (chhatris) near a school in Basanpeer village under Sadar police station, Jaisalmer, some people began pelting stones. Prompt action was taken, and the police force dispersed the crowd. Senior police officials, administrative officers, and police personnel reached the spot immediately. The situation is now completely peaceful.”
It further said, “Based on video footage, a crackdown is being carried out against the miscreants.”
“We received information about some miscreants creating a law and order situation by pelting stones at each other over a construction dispute. A team along with additional force, was dispatched to the spot. The police had to use mild force to bring the situation under control after being attacked by the mob. So far, 30 people have been detained,” said Sudhir Chaudhary, Jaisalmer superintendent of police.
