Decades old Kurdish militant struggle ends

Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), on Wednesday said the group's armed struggle against Turkey has ended. A look at why the announcement is a milestone in a conflict that goes back 40+ years
-
Abdullah Ocalan, a Kurdish activist, founded the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in 1978 to fight for Kurdish rights, initially seeking an independent state.
The PKK launched an armed insurgency against the Turkish government in 1984.
The conflict has been brutal: over 40,000 people have died since 1984. Turkey, the United States, and European Union classify the PKK as a terrorist organisation, while many Kurds view Ocalan as a freedom fighter.
