The number of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), medical colleges, and their seats increased significantly in the last 10 years under Narendra Modi government, Union health minister Jagat Prakash Nadda said on Tuesday.

DEHRADUN:

Addressing the fifth convocation ceremony of AIIMS, Rishikesh, Nadda said: "Today, 1.75 lakh (175,000) Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are operational across the country that are providing a range of services pertaining to healthcare and wellness. In the last 10 years, there has been a 101% increase in medical colleges, totaling 780 across the country. There has been a 130% increase in MBBS seats, while PG seats have seen an increase of 138% in the last 10 years."

"Till the advent of this century, India had just one AIIMS, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee government added six during its rule and now the total number was 23. In the 10 years of PM Narendra Modi's rule, 16 new AIIMS were added," he said.

He further said that the central government was committed to providing world class healthcare to citizens. "The government is focused on providing healthcare which is not only curative but also preventive, palliative and rehabilitative," he said.

Nadda also praised AIIMS Rishikesh for effectively utilising the helicopter and drone services by rescuing 309 critical patients so far using the services.

The service was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October last year.
