Pb guv sanctions Majithia’s prosecution in DA case

Punjab governor Gulab Chand Kataria has granted sanction to prosecute Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case filed by the state Vigilance Bureau (VB), officials aware of the details said on Saturday.

The sanction, which came on Friday and was confirmed by HT through officials in the state home department, paves the way for the VB to initiate criminal proceedings against Majithia under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Majithia, a three-time MLA from Majitha and former revenue minister between 2012 and 2017, is accused of possessing assets worth ‘over ₹700 crore, disproportionate to his declared income by 1200% with alleged links to a drug trafficking network, according to the VB. He has denied the allegations and said that the cases area result of “political vendetta”. The state government has, however, maintained that everything has been done as per law.
