Vegas Leads at Halfway, Scheffler Three Back
Hindustan Times Bengaluru
|May 18, 2025
First-round leader Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela maintained a two-shot, halfway advantage in the PGA Championship on Friday at Quail Hollow Club with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler lurking three shots behind at tied fifth and Max Homa roaring into contention after firing the joint low round of the day.
CHARLOTTE:
Vegas, the world No. 70, carded a one-under 70 to reach eight under on the week, ahead of France's Matthieu Pavon (65), England's Matt Fitzpatrick (68) and South Korea's Kim Si-woo (64), whose round matched Homa's. The 40-year-old had a four-shot lead when he reached the par-four closing hole but ran into trouble after he sent his approach from the middle of the fairway into a greenside bunker, finishing with a double-bogey.
After an opening round in which many top players struggled, Scheffler found his groove late in the round.
