GOVERNOR RAISED OBJECTIONS THAT THE AMENDMENTS COULD TILT THE BALANCE OF POWER AWAY FROM ELECTED MEMBERS
BENGALURU: Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot has withheld assent to two key amendment bills aimed at overhauling the state's cooperative sector and has instead forwarded them to the President for further consideration. The move comes after months of friction between the state government and the Raj Bhavan over the bills' core provisions, which the governor said could undermine democratic values and the autonomy of cooperative institutions.
The two bills in question — The Karnataka Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2024 and The Karnataka Souharda Sahakari (Amendment) Bill, 2024 — were passed by the state legislature in its July 2023 session.
