Allahabad HC bar declares strike, seeks judge's impeachment

The high court bar association of the Allahabad high court on Monday announced that its lawyers will abstain from judicial work from Tuesday till further notice in protest against the Supreme Court collegium's decision to recommend the transfer of Delhi HC judge Justice Yashwant Varma to his parent Allahabad HC while he faces an enquiry over the alleged discovery of cash from his official residence.

The Allahabad HCBA passed a resolution on Monday, urging CJI Sanjiv Khanna to allow registration of an FIR against Varma and recommend initiation of impeachment proceedings.

Terming the discovery of cash as the "blackest day" in the history of Indian judiciary, the HCBA said that an in-house inquiry against Justice Varma is "questionable" and "unacceptable" to the judicial fraternity.
