Sudan army clashes with allied militia over food stores

Clashes over food broke out between the Sudanese army and one of its ally militias in the besieged, hunger-stricken city of Kadugli in the southern Kordofan region, eyewitnesses and an army source said on Wednesday

“Yesterday, people with weapons tried to get food out of the traders’ warehouses, to feed hungry people,” local civil servant Issa Kafi, 33, told AFP.

His account was corroborated by another eyewitness, who said “army troops clashed with (the militia) to stop people going into stores”.

Requesting anonymity for his safety, the witness identified the group as Kafi Tayara, a militia named for its army-aligned leader.

Kafi Tayara has fought in Kordofan on the side of the army since war broke out between it and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in April 2023.

An army source described Tuesday’s clashes as resulting from an “unruly group trying to loot the city market”.
