Lebanon ex-bank chief accused of corruption freed on $14m bail

Lebanon's former central bank governor Riad Salameh walked free from a year in custody over embezzlement allegations after posting more than $14 million in bail, a judicial official told AFP.

"Salameh left the Bhannes Hospital (in north Beirut) where he was being held and treated under guard," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
Salameh ended his 30-year term as central bank governor in 2023 under a cloud, with several European countries probing allegations of financial crimes.
Many in Lebanon hold him responsible for the crippling financial crisis that has gripped the country since late 2019, during which depositors lost their life savings as the value of the currency collapsed.
