The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has charged top leaders of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI (M) in a bank fraud case involving Rs 1.8 billion.

Among those charged are K Radhakrishnan, a member of the Lok Sabha, and A.C. Moideen, the former minister for cooperatives in the state.

The ED filed its final report regarding the party-run Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank in the trial court on Monday.

The CPI (M) has rejected the charges, claiming they are part of a political conspiracy to defame the party ahead of crucial elections.

Radhakrishnan, a former minister, is the 70th defendant in the case, while the ED has listed the CPI (M) as the 68th defendant. The ED alleges the party and its leaders received Rs 1.8 billion in commissions for arranging illegal member loans.
