According to UAE law, a person who commits electronic fraud via social media sites, lawyer Adnan Obaid Al Shaali said that he is punished with imprisonment for a period of not less than one year and a fine ranging from Dhs250,000 to Dhs1 million.

He added that the penalty becomes more severe if the perpetrator uses technical means to conceal his identity, such as malware or encryption, in which case Article 16 applies,
