Cash-for-vote charges haunt Kerala's ruling party

A major controversy has arisen in Vadakkancherry, Kerala, after an independent candidate claimed he voted for the ruling communist-led coalition in exchange for an offer of 5 million rupees.
EU Jafar, who won the block council seat with the support of the Congress-led opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), cross-voted to ensure the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) candidate's victory in the council's president position.
An audio recording has surfaced in which Jafar himself reveals to a Congress leader that he was offered money to switch sides.
During the conversation, Jafar states that he has been given an “option” and is doing what he must to secure his future.
