Cargo ship catches fire off Kerala, 4 missing

A Singapore-flagged container vessel, MV Wan Hai 503, caught fire following multiple explosions approximately 78 nautical miles off Beypore, near here, on Monday.

Twenty containers reportedly fell into the sea following the fire on board, when the vessel was between Beypore and Azhikkal ports. According to reports, 18 crew members were rescued by Indian Navy and Coast Guard and four were missing. The 270-metre-long vessel departed Colombo on 7 June and was expected to reach Mumbai on 10 June. Of the 22 crew members on board, 18 jumped into the sea and were rescued in boats. According to Kochi Defence PRO, efforts are underway to rescue the remaining and the vessel is presently on fire and adrift.
