'Relief' Parties unite to pledge funds for Gloucester Day event
Gloucester Citizen
|March 05, 2026
HERE is great relief funding for Gloucester Day will be available this year as civic chiefs made a rare show of unity in pledging money for the annual celebration.
The commemoration of the lifting of the Siege of Gloucester will receive a contribution of £3,500 from Gloucester City Council.
Councillors from all parties backed an amendment from Community Independent Alastair Chambers to financially support the Gloucester Day Parade 2026 at last week's budget meeting.
The annual event dates from September 5, 1643, when the city held out against Royalist forces during the First English Civil War. It was celebrated for centuries before dying out in the 19th century.
