IT’S GONE FROM FRAGMENTATION TO INTEGRATION
-
A SKILLED WORKFORCE is vital, but the fragmented skilling (Vocational Education and Training, or VET) sector needed an institutional anchor for coherence.
This led to the setting up (in December 2018) of the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) as the unified regulator. The NCVET integrates VET with general education, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Before the NCVET
The skilling ecosystem was characterised by multiple regulators. The NCVT (trade courses, ITIs) and the NSDA/SSCs (short-term training) created gaps: overlapping standards, inconsistent quality, and lack of a single authority. The NCVET merged regulatory functions of the NCVT and the NSDA.
