LAST YEAR'S UNESCO report on teachers noted that there is a need for 44 million primary and secondary teachers worldwide by 2030. This includes a demand for seven out of 10 teachers at the secondary level, and a need to replace over half of the existing teachers leaving the profession.

Rod Smith, group MD of International Education at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, believes that as India develops into a centre of excellence in education, it can fulfil part of that need (of new teachers).
