Smaller airlines seek reforms to compete
Financial Express Chennai
|February 07, 2026
SMALLER AND REGIONAL airlines are seeking changes in airport slot allocation, operating costs and access to financing, stating that without structural reforms new entrants will continue to struggle despite strong growth in the domestic aviation market.
Executives from Akasa Air, FLY91, Star Air and proposed carrier JettWings Airways told FE on the sidelines of the recently held Wings India 2026 that the domestic market remains heavily skewed in favour of large incumbents, which controlover 90% of capacity. They said approvals for new airlines alone will not address the structural constraints that have historically limited the ability of smaller players to scale.
