Reform sets its sights on cutting school transport bills

|July 03, 2025
KENT County Council leader Linden Kemkaran has pledged to tackle the “absolutely enormous” £98 million annual bill the authority faces for taxis which take children to school.

The county council is required to provide home-to-school transport for children with special educational needs and disabilities, or where a child cannot be found a school place near their home.
The bill has soared in part because of the way education health care plans (ECHPs), which entitle many children to door-to-door transport, have been changed in recent years.
Speaking to Times Radio, Cllr Kemkaran said: “I'm led to believe that a lot of taxi companies quote KCC a rate that is way above the market rate.
