Oil spill prompts call to 'stay away' from pond

PEOPLE have been urged to “stay away” from a popular Derbyshire beauty spot after an oil spill contaminated a reservoir.

Osborne's Pond in Shipley Country Park was been cordoned off by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service after a passer-by reported the spillage to rangers on Sunday.

Emergency services and the Environment Agency remained at the scene yesterday to assist with containing the spillage, which entered the pond through an inlet pipe.

Two booms, which are temporary barriers within water, were placed in front of the outlet to help contain the oil, and rangers put dams in place across two streams to limit the flow of water.
