A DAY after Remembrance Sunday, war heroes like Winston Churchill are very much on our minds.

It was the wartime PM's daring escape from a Prisoner of War camp in South Africa during the Second Boer War in 1899 that first propelled him to fame. Working as a 24-year-old war reporter, he had been captured after a raid on a military train.
Reports of his extraordinary escape - scaling the prison walls on his own and trekking the hostile bush for days - turned Churchill into a national hero.
